Yoga
Taught by Barbara Lyon
Two Monday evening
classes, 6:00 - 7:30 and 7:45 - 9:15, one Wednesday evening class, 6:30 -
8:00.
Delight and refresh
your body and mind and heart with yoga. Stretch, balance, clarify, heal,
strengthen, relax!
Each class begins
with a 'centering' - a moment for peace and relaxation, a chance to sit
with yourself and take a breath. This is followed by a breathing exercise,
a warm-up period of stretching and twists, then on to the asanas (yoga
poses) themselves. We follow those with cooling-down poses and a long,
delicious, lying-down relaxation, inch by tranquil inch.
The class is
different each week - one class might focus on releasing and opening the
hips, another on the shoulders, another on flexing the back. One week it
might be all about strengthening, the next, lengthening.
The first few classes
of each semester are geared for beginners, with lots of gentle stretching.
Seasoned practitioners also appreciate this gentle approach to their body
as it allows them to go deeper into their practice. As the semester
progresses, classes become more strength-oriented, the poses more
challenging. Great care is taken to prepare your limbs and muscles for the
asanas (poses) in each class.
Classes are small
(11-14 students) with plenty of personal attention. They are held Monday
evenings, 6:00-7:30 and 7:45-9:15, and Wednesday evenings, 6:30-8:00. The
Monday 6:00 class is ongoing, for students who have had some yoga; the
7:45 class is more gentle and slower-paced, suitable for beginners; Wednesday
is in between. Classes are held at
Cambridge Health Associates, 335 Broadway, Cambridge, MA 02139. There's a
free parking lot in back. The semesters begin in September, January, April
and July (only Monday classes in July & August). However, you can join a
class any time on a drop-in basis. The
cost of a semester varies, depending on how many weeks it covers. Drop-in
classes cost $15; or $12.50 per class if you sign up for the
semester.
All props (mats,
cushions, belts, blankets, etc.) are provided. Wear comfortable clothing.
I have been a
practitioner of yoga since 1986 and a teacher since 1997. I teach in the
Kripalu style of yoga, with influences of Iyengar. I am also interested in
new approaches to yoga and we often experiment with these in class.
