What is Aston® Fitness Training?

Aston® Fitness Training is a sophisticated, multidimensional exercise program for loosening, stretching, toning and cardiovascular workouts that facilitates the whole body in achieving and maintaining appropriate proportions, muscle tone, joint resiliency, flexibility and cardiovascular conditioning.

Benefits of Aston® Fitness Training

Aston-Patterning® concepts of ergonomics, alignment, cooperative movement, ground reaction force, and respecting the body's natural asymmetry are all key elements of the Aston® Fitness Training. As with other components of the Aston system, the fitness program is tailored to each individual's specific shape, limitations, potentials, tasks and goals. The five forms of training are horizontal and vertical loosening, toning, stretching, and cardiovascular conditioning. Aston® Loosening, Toning and Stretching are used as integral components of Aston-Patterning® sessions to achieve specific postural changes and optimal performance, and taught in a class format for overall fitness. Aston® Treadmill and Aston® Cycle apply Aston concepts to uniquely interface with your workout while walking, running, cycling, and stair stepping, combining balance, toning, cardiovascular training and fun, all at the same time.

  • Aston® Horizontal and Vertical Loosening are done lying on the back, stomach or side using supports to optimize body usage (Horizontal Loosening) or in standing position (Vertical Loosening). Easy movements are performed in a comfortable range to facilitate slack in and around joints. These movements decrease stiffness and discomfort by targeting the deep and superficial aspects of the joints and muscles resulting in increased lubrication, circulation and range of motion.
  • Aston® Toning strengthens muscles without adding unnecessary compressions to the joints by paying close attention to Aston concepts. The exercises begin with the use of the body weight against gravity, primarily in lying and standing. Exercises are advanced by adding additional resistance of weights and stretch cords.
  • Aston® Stretching is designed to stretch the muscle tissue without over-stretching ligaments and tendons. The use of body supports and an understanding of optimal alignment and movement allow ligaments and tendons to maintain their integrity, thereby protecting you from injury while increasing the resting length of your muscles.

What to Expect from Your First Session

Aston® Fitness Training teaches the form and sequence of the workout for each individual's specific need. The first task is to find your "best neutral" so that you are toning optimal alignment as you exercise rather than your habitual posture. It may be that loosening a holding pattern, or toning an underused set of muscles, gives you the support you need to achieve a more neutral body alignment. These options are explored through postural and movement assessment, which inform the sequence of the workout, and may include any of the Aston Fitness forms (see above)
