What is Aston® Movement?
Aston® Movement, a unique perspective in bio-mechanics, offers simple and effective exercises that can be applied to walking, sitting and standing activities.
Benefits of Aston® Movement
Aston® Movement teaches movement designs that enable you to use gravity to your best advantage in order to reduce bodily strain and discomfort, feel better supported, and increase overall fitness. Whether your work requires physical labor, or you spend long hours sitting, working on a computer or driving a car, if you are a fitness enthusiast, a musician, enjoy gardening, recovering from an injury or seeking ways to lessen the effects of aging, Aston® movement coaching teaches you to integrate principles of natural movement into all your activities.
Aston® Movement is a creative program for any age and can be taught during an individual session or as a workshop designed for any special interest group. Benefits from Aston® Movement lessons include:
- reduced repetitive strain, because effort of movement is more evenly distributed throughout your whole body
- increased overall fitness, because you are engaging dimensionally balanced tone
- reduced compensational tension, because your movement honors your body's unique structural asymmetries
- more internal space, taking pressure off organs and joints and allowing increased volume of breathe, because your body dimensions are more balanced
- less effort and more efficiency during everyday or specialized performance activities, whatever your challenges and goals
What to Expect from Your First Session
Aston® Movement lessons begin with awareness of your weight-bearing pattern in sitting, standing, or walking and progress to a new experience of interacting with the earth's natural forces. Movement designs are taught that loosen restricted areas and tone your body in a more neutral relationship to gravity. Each movement design is a unit that is gradually built upon to support an action. Lessons include specific movement coaching for activities of interest. By practicing finding your neutral alignment along with individualized movement cues, you are able to let go of old habits and bring postural changes to your activities, reducing strain or injury and improving performance.
Aston® Movement is very helpful for reducing functional, day-to-day tension. Structural holding patterns, or more chronically held tension, may be more effectively addressed by Aston® Bodywork sessions (see Aston-Patterning®) in which movement is used to bring the resulting postural changes to your activities and to reclaim the benefits of the bodywork in between sessions.
