What is Massage Therapy?
Massage therapy is one of the oldest forms of treatment in the world, having first been described in China during the second century B.C. Therapeutic massage helps to relieve soft tissue restrictions that have resulted from injury or imbalance. Headaches, neck pain, shoulder injuries, low back pain, sore legs and other conditions are often helped with therapeutic massage.
Benefits of Massage Therapy
Research shows that regular massage can help:
- release chronic muscular tension and pain,
- increase joint flexibility,
- improve circulation of blood and lymph,
- promote faster healing,
- reduce fatigue and stress,
- and boost immune function.
Massage is also known to promote better sleep, improve concentration, and create an overall sense of well-being.
What to Expect from Your First Session
Your session usually starts with a "check-in" with your practitioner. The therapist will discuss with you your goals for the session, such as areas of discomfort or injury. He or she will also ask questions about your health, including medications you're currently taking, and any other medical conditions (such as high blood pressure) that may impact your treatment. Then the practitioner will first warm up and work the area, regularly checking in with you about pressure and your comfort. Please tell your therapist if you have any special needs.
