Holistic
Vision Improvement: See more comfortably and clearly.
Vision is variable.
How we see can be affected by where we are, what we do, and how we feel. We
use muscles to focus our eyes. Like all muscles, they may become strained
in response to stress. Our eyes may tire more quickly, become sore and not
see as well. If this strain becomes habitual we may lose clarity and
comfort. Reading, driving, bright sunlight or particular activities may
become difficult.
There is an
alternative to stronger and stronger lenses. We can change the ways we use
and care for our eyes to promote better vision.
In Holistic Vision
Improvement we experiment with different ways of seeing and explore what
leads to both our clear and blurry vision. Simple Yoga-like techniques help
us understand and change the ways we use our eyes so that we can relieve
eyestrain, prevent deterioration and improve our vision. Like learning to
swim, practice between lessons brings faster progress. Many of the
practices fit into our regular eye use, others require a little time every
day until they becom/-e natural.
This work is helpful
for most vision issues: eyestrain, vision related headaches, myopia
(nearsightedness), Hyperopia (farsightedness), presbyopia ("old age
sight"), astigmatism, amblyopia and strabismus, to mention the most
common. It is an educational experience which gives us information,
techniques and choices. Working with an optometrist or ophthalmologist we
can expect to reduce the strength of our glasses or contact lenses.
Holistic Vision
Improvement is rooted in the Bates Method and Yoga. It is about taking
charge of our vision and healing it from the inside out. Reclaiming our
vision is empowering. It deepens our experience of living.
How do we change our
vision? There are four primary means by which we can release the strain and
see better.
Relaxation
When we relax, all our systems work more effortlessly: we move more
fluidly, we digest more easily and learn more rapidly. As we learn to relax
our eyes, seeing becomes more effortless and clear.
Mental Focus
The eyes tend to follow the mind. When we are overwhelmed or distracted we
may lose our mental focus. When this happens, it is harder to see clearly
and for the mind to understand what we are seeing. We will use
visualization and the imagination to develop relaxed mental focus.
Movement
Our eyes are normally in constant motion. When we strain, the eye muscles
tend to move less freely and easily and our vision is diminished. We will
learn gentle body movements to help us return to a more relaxed state.
Seeing from the
Core (C)
By centering our awareness within the body, our eyes can relax. We can more
easily be present to both our inner and outer experiences. Seeing from the
Core helps us integrate the clarity into our everyday lives.
When our arms seem
too short or the road signs too small we can do something about it.
Holistic Vision
Improvement opens us to the beauty of the world as well as to the beauty
within. As we relax and become kinder to ourselves we are able to see, and
be seen, more comfortably and clearly.
